The persecution of the opposition members of parliament (Nova Slovenija) by the State Prosecutor’s Office raises serious concerns about respect for democratic standards and the rule of law in Slovenia.
The members of the Slovenian parliamentary Commission for the Oversight of Intelligence and Security Services were fulfilling their legal and constitutional duties and were obliged to act when indications emerged that 15 citizens and opposition politicians were being unlawfully wiretapped.
Attempts to criminalise parliamentary oversight set a dangerous precedent. The instrumentalisation of the State Prosecutor’s Office just before elections for political and electoral purposes is unacceptable and undermines public confidence in the judiciary. The European People’s Party will always stand up for democratic oversight, the rights of the opposition, and the fundamental principles of the rule of law.

explaining the challenges our society is facing and presenting our vision for the
future of European Union.
The Party Platform was developed in EPP Working Group 1 for “European Policy” chaired
by EPP President Wilfried MARTENS ?and EPP Vice President Peter HINTZE. The Working

document for more than two years and received input?from the drafting committee as
well as senior and young experts. The document was adopted at the 2012 EPP Congress
